GI registration guide

How a grower uses an existing GI tag, and how a farmer group registers a new one.

Start with the cheaper route.

Most growers whose crop already carries a GI have never registered as authorised users, so they cannot legally use the tag their own produce qualifies for. Check the GI tag directory first.

Find who holds the GI

The register names the proprietor: usually a growers’ association, a board or a state department.

Who: youWhere: GI Registry list
Ask what they need from you

Proof that your land is inside the registered area is always part of it.

Papers: land recordTime: 1–2 weeks
File the authorised-user application

Filed with the GI Registry, usually with the registered proprietor supporting it.

Form GI-3Fee: see the Registry’s fee schedule
Use the tag on what you sell

Once approved, the tag goes on your produce, and that is what the premium attaches to.

Renew every 10 years

GI Registry ↗
  • A new GI takes years, not months, and needs money for expert drafting. Most successful applications are backed by a state department or a research institute.
  • Your agricultural university or state horticulture department has usually done this before and is the cheapest help you will find.
  • A GI protects a place, not a brand. It does not stop anyone inside the area from using it, and it is not a trademark.
  • Whether the tag earns more at the mandi: GI premium rates.
